What is Compounding? Compounding is the art and science of customizing medications to fit a particular patient's needs. Compounding is inherent to pharmacy practice and is what pharmacy was founded on. It was commonplace to walk into an "apothecary" at the turn of the century and see the "druggist" rolling pills or making special creams for patients. In the 1950's drug manufacturers started to perfect the technique of mass producing medications. They we able to make medications in large quantities with reliable dosages in a short period of time. Soon after that, the "apothecary" became the drug store, and finally came to be known as the pharmacy, indicating that this was no longer a place to go to chat with the druggist about the weather and how to cure your son's sore throat. It has now evolved into a more product focused dispensing role, where the pharmacist has little to no time to talk to you about your medications, let alone the weather. Compounding quickly fell out of favor, because it either took too much of the pharmacist's time or the pharmacy was not equipped with the proper equipment to make a compounded medication.
The staff at Pharmacy Care Solutions is out to change that. We are committed to total patient care. Your compounded prescriptions will be made to our stringent quality standards and each patient will receive thorough counseling on their medications. We call each patient after they have picked up a new prescription to check on the outcome of the medication and to find out if the patient has any questions. We then send a follow-up letter to the physician informing them of how the patient is doing with the medication and what have been the outcomes.
Equipment We here at Pharmacy Care Solutions realize that a patient's well-being is of the utmost importance to them. We strive to make sure each patient is happy with their compounded medication.
The following is a list of some of the equipment used to compound the medications at Pharmacy Care Solutions:
Flavoring One unique aspect of working in a compounding pharmacy is the ability to flavor medications to match the tastes of the patient. Whether it means mixing a bubble gum flavoring into a child's suspension or a beef flavoring for your cat, we try to make the medicine taste good so it is less trouble to give. After all, would you rather have a bitter aftertaste in your mouth after using a vitamin solution or a pleasing mint taste? The various dosage forms that can be flavored include solutions, suspensions, medicated lollipops, medicated lozenges, oral sprays, oral troches, and lip balms. Let's say you have difficulty encouraging your child to swallow a tablet. That is no problem because we can crush the tablets and make a flavored suspension. The following are lists of human and animal flavors we can use.
Compounding for Animals At Pharmacy Care Solutions we specialize in compounding medications to match the needs of your pet. With the veterinarian, patient, and pharmacist working together, it is possible to create a dosage form which can easily be given. For instance, cats are known as being picky animals and will usually refuse any medicine. They often even eat around a capsule wrapped in food. On the other hand, if you take the contents of those capsules, make a suspension, and add chicken flavor, the cat may actually enjoy taking the medicine. Tuna flavoring can also work wonders for cats turning up their nose at regular medicine. But we are not here to only help out with cats. We can create specialized dosage forms for a dog, horse, or even a bird. The main point is WE ARE HERE TO HELP in the case of a problem that seems to have no solution. A few more examples of how we can help is making a peanut butter suspension for a ferret, adding an antibiotic to beef flavored gelatin balls, compounding a product discontinued by the manufacturer, developing a gel which can be applied to the animal’s ear, or creating a "hairball" remedy for cats. The possibilities are endless!
We are here to work together with you and the veterinarian. Please talk to your vet or contact us if you are interested in your pet using a compounded medication specifically made by us. We have many animal flavors to pick from that we can use.
